Obtaining Java

It is assumed you have got the latest JDK (Java Development Kit) and deployed on the computer. The first mandatory requirement is to install a JDK 1.6 or JDK 1.7 environment. If the JDK has not been installed, please choose to download either Java SE 6 or Java SE 7 and install it.


Setting JAVA_HOME Environment Variable

After JDK is installed, set the JAVA_HOME environment variable. Open the Control Panel and then open the System.


Click the “Environment Variables” button.

Create a new system variable, name it as JAVA_HOME. Assign its value as the path of the Java installation directory in your computer. For example in my computer it is C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23. Be noted that the path may be different from yours.


Click OK until all windows are closed.


Obtaining JBoss

JBoss Application Server (JBoss AS) version 7 can be freely downloaded from the community site:


Download the latest release which normally appears at the top list. The JBoss installation is built in a ZIP or TAR.GZ. You may choose which ever format you prefer.


Installing JBoss and Starting JBoss

After the installation file is got, extract the file to a directory on your computer. There are no complex installation steps; all you need is simply to extract the file. In this example, the JBoss is extracted into the directory C:\jboss-as-7.1.1.Final.

Now let us test the installation, whether JBoss can run on the computer. Go to the bin sub-directory and locate the standalone.bat file. Please run the file to start JBoss.


A console window will appear and show the list of JBoss modules being loaded and executed. You may scroll down the window until you are certain that JBoss is running with no errors.

Open a browser program (e.g. Internet Explorer or Firefox) and type the following URL in the address field:.



Verify if the page can be displayed successfully. If you can see the web page nicely, then you can assure that Jboss is installed and running correctly on the computer.

To shutdown Jobss, you only need to press Ctrl-C on the JBoss console window and reponse “Y” when the program needs a confirmation.
